EXTRA FUNDING TO DEVELOP IDEAS FOR TACKLING CONGESTION

Extra funds are being made available to Cambridgeshire County Council to help develop proposals for tackling congestion.

The Department for Transport has agreed to give the Council up to £1 million for further investigations into proposals that could deal with the growing problem of congestion in and around Cambridge.

The Council is currently consulting the public and stakeholders on a package of proposals to tackle congestion.

The additional funding will be used for extra modelling work arising from feedback from the consultation. This will provide the Council with more information on the effects of measures being discussed during the consultation.

The current package of proposals includes radical improvements to public transport with segregated busways and bus lanes coming into the city, expansions to Park & Ride sites, more frequent and later running bus services, extensive improvements to cycle and pedestrian facilities and a morning peak congestion charge of between £3 and £5.

Cambridgeshire County Councillor Roy Pegram, Deputy Leader said, "This money will help us carry out further investigations into the best ways of tackling the growing problem of congestion in Cambridge. In light of what people have told us during the consultation we are already reviewing our proposals and once the consultation is complete we will consider the results and amend our scheme to take account of their views. We are taking the feedback we get from the public very seriously. The extra funding will enable us to carry out further tests and do more modelling so we can make informed decisions.

"All of this work costs money and I'm very pleased that central Government is putting up the cash. There are still more than six weeks left for people to have their say on the proposals and I would urge everyone who has an opinion on the growing problem of congestion to have their say."

The Council has already held more than 13 roadshows across the county to give residents a chance to find out about the proposals. A further 15 roadshows are being held before the end of the consultation on Friday 29 February. Workshops have also been held with local businesses and charities.

An online survey is available for people to give their views on tackling congestion at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/congestion
